Apple is preparing a significant redesign for its laptops. Reports indicate that the upcoming MacBook Pro will not only transition from mini-LED to OLED displays but will also eliminate the well-known “notch” in favor of a more compact camera.
The new MacBook Pro models with OLED displays are expected to launch in 14-inch and 16-inch versions between 2026 and 2027. Apple is likely to use hybrid OLED technology, similar to that used in the iPad Pro. Additionally, the company plans to replace the notch with a punch-hole camera, increasing the screen’s usable area.
The notch first appeared on the MacBook Pro in 2021 when Apple updated the device’s design. This move allowed the display to extend closer to the edges without increasing the device’s size. However, the decision was met with criticism as the notch occupied part of the macOS menu bar.
The rumored punch-hole design is expected to make the screen more user-friendly, as the menu bar will no longer overlap with the notch. There is also speculation that Apple might introduce Dynamic Island on the MacBook Pro—a feature currently available on iPhones that displays real-time activities like voice recordings, AirDrop transfers, or navigation. However, details about this feature remain unclear.
Apple is also reportedly working on transitioning other devices to OLED displays. For instance, the iPad mini could adopt OLED technology by late 2026, followed by the iPad Air in 2027. The MacBook Air is expected to feature an OLED screen by 2028, though it may retain the notch. There are even rumors of a foldable Apple device with an OLED display debuting the same year.
