ChatGPT Desktop App for Windows Now Available Also for Free Users

ChatGPT and similar AI chatbots are becoming an integral part of daily life for many users. While a Windows app for ChatGPT has been available for some time, it was previously limited to premium subscribers – until now.

OpenAI has made the ChatGPT Windows app available to everyone, mirroring the accessibility of its web and mobile apps. The app can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store.

In terms of functionality, the Windows app closely resembles the mobile and web versions. However, using it on a PC offers advantages like easier input for longer text or the ability to submit images for scanning. The app includes popular features such as conversation mode and various digital voice options. Still, the free-tier limitations remain—users can quickly reach the interaction cap during active use. (Rest assured, this update was typed the old-fashioned way – by human hands!)

For those who upgrade to ChatGPT’s premium plan, the Windows app becomes significantly more useful. Although its interface remains largely similar to the web version, the dedicated desktop window can better fit into professional workflows. Whether the premium version is worth it ultimately depends on individual use cases.

This move also adds to OpenAI’s competition with Microsoft’s Copilot, its AI offering deeply integrated into Windows features like the taskbar, Office apps, and even Paint. While ChatGPT has gained a stronger positive reception among general users, Microsoft’s Copilot aims to excel through its seamless integration into the Windows ecosystem.
