Obsidian Isn’t Worried About “Avowed” Releasing in a Busy Month

Avowed director Carrie Patel isn’t worried about the game launching in a highly competitive month like February. In an interview with GamesRadar this week, Patel shared his confidence in the game’s ability to stand out.

Obsidian Entertainment’s RPG was initially set to release earlier this year. It’s debatable whether the competition from titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, STALKER 2, and the recently launched Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was less intense than the lineup for February. However, Obsidian seems confident in their decision. Originally planned for mid-November, Avowed has been rescheduled for February 18, 2025. The reason for the delay, announced in August, wasn’t tied to optimization needs. Instead, Obsidian explained they wanted to give the major fall releases some breathing room. The game will also launch on Xbox Game Pass on day one, with the idea that by February, gamers will be ready for something fresh after spending months on the fall’s biggest titles.

“As a gamer, the great thing about today’s industry is that there’s always something new coming out,” Patel said. “I don’t think you can find a window where absolutely nothing is releasing. We’re confident that Avowed will stand out.”

Patel’s optimism is commendable, but February’s release lineup is undeniably packed with heavyweights. The month will see several major launches, including Civilization 7, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, and Monster Hunter Wilds.
