The Release of Stalker 2 Provokes an Influx of Tourists in the Zone

Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl has finally hit the market, garnering well-deserved praise. While the game didn’t launch in perfect technical condition, GSC Game World is committed to addressing any issues. Meanwhile, an intriguing development has surfaced.

According to the South China Morning Post, many fans of the game are venturing beyond its virtual world into the physical realm. Reports from Ukraine’s border police indicate a significant surge in unauthorized attempts to enter the restricted zone surrounding the former Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Those caught are described by authorities as “adventurers” and “gamers,” defying legal boundaries and risking their lives in the process.

The Polish site GamePressure notes that this phenomenon is not entirely surprising, as a similar trend occurred after the release of the first Stalker game. However, the situation in 2024 is notably different due to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. With borders tightly closed and access strictly prohibited, Ukrainian officials have issued strong warnings to would-be trespassers. Entering the zone is both a legal violation and a life-threatening act, as radiation levels remain a significant hazard. Ukrainian police reportedly intercept up to 400 such adventurers annually.

As for Heart of Chornobyl, the game has been met with widespread interest and appreciation. Reviews on Steam are largely positive, and the user score on Metacritic stands at a solid 7.9. One Steam user’s heartfelt review sums up the sentiment shared by many fans:

“I can feel the love, hard work, and passion poured into this beautiful wasteland”, writes user Toaste. “I deeply appreciate the dedication the developers have shown to deliver a worthy continuation of a beloved game. After over a decade of waiting, the pressure and expectations for the next Stalker must have been monumental. And the developers have delivered—at least for me.”

This latest installment cements Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl as a testament to the enduring legacy of the franchise, resonating deeply with its fanbase.
