Why Rockstar Is Delaying the Second GTA 6 Trailer

The debut trailer for the open-world crime thriller GTA 6 marked its first anniversary on Thursday, yet Rockstar Games remains tight-lipped about the next preview. A former studio animator has shed some light on the reasons behind this delay.

Mike York, who worked at Rockstar New England from 2012 to 2017 and contributed to the development of GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, explained that the studio deliberately withhold details about the second trailer.

“They could easily announce the trailer’s release date and say, ‘It’s coming then,’ but they don’t. And they don’t because it’s an incredibly effective marketing strategy.” York shared.

York elaborated that Rockstar’s silence builds an aura of intrigue and mystery around the studio, keeping fans engaged by sparking speculation and theories to fill the gaps between announcements. While at Rockstar, York and his colleagues reportedly enjoyed following fans’ wild theories.

The former developer also suggested that Rockstar might even subtly play along with conspiracy theorists. While they avoid discussing the game, the popular notion that hidden hints about trailer timing exist in promotional materials is unlikely to be true.

The first and only trailer for GTA 6 so far has already broken records, amassing over 224 million views on YouTube. The game is expected to launch in fall next year for PS5, Xbox Series X, and Series S.
